DSFRS v FDNY FOOTBALL
Thursday 14 - 18 March 2009

Andy Burridge- DFSRS 5-a-side Football Secretary

This was the fourth biennial visit to play FDNY Soccer Club in New York, a tour that started after 9/11, and the first time as joint brigades. The numbers are made up of half from the football section and half from uniformed or non-uniformed staff. We have continued our strong links with our New York brothers supporting the scholarship of Sergio Villanueva (a squad member lost in the World Trade Centre tragedy). As always, Joe Brosi had organised a full weekend of activities for our trip. We were booked into the luxurious Marriott Hotel on Lexington Avenue at a good discount. On Thursday we landed in NY mid-afternoon, picked up by Jimmy and John, with a detailed tour of the city en route. It included a brief stop at a mid-town firehouse and a recce of local bars for later that evening! We were then dropped off at our hotel before our evening out with Jimmy and John. Friday – the big match in the evening after a day’s sightseeing. The game was played at Flushing Meadows (site of the NY Soccer World Tournament in 2007 and the famous US Open Tennis). Considering we had only five regular football players and some ageing vets, we did remarkably well. On a hot Spring day and with players struggling from the sights and nights of the city, it was backs to the wall from the kick off against their full squad of 20. The fresh and fit FDNY squad gave us a bit of a run around. Goalie Ryan Draper was kept busy from the start and the back four, Paul Richards, Jason Hawkins, Dave Thomas and Sam Bray did a great job. Unfortunately, a slight lapse in concentration gave FDNY an easy chance to slot home the first goal. Despite outstanding efforts from our midfield Dave Lock, Steve Arnold, Nick Tavener and Neil Hanlon in the evening heat, the half finished with another gifted goal - FDNY 2 - 0 DSFRS. The start of the second half, and an encouraging team talk at the break, paid dividends with a scorcher from Steve Arnold, 2-1. The front line of Garry Wallace and Brendon Davies causing some problems in their experienced team. We continued with our resurgence with another goal (2-2 could we actually win?) FDNY’S coaching staff, Joe Brosi and John Zolner were frustrated by their team’s missed chances, but after tactical substitutions of non-players (injuries and exhaustion) FDNY dominated play – the final score FDNY 4 – 2 DSFRS. Credit must go to all the players including subs Andy Greene, Ian Wheeler, Kev Bowden, Kev Stacey, Ben Legg and Andy Burridge. After the match, both teams celebrated with a true Yankee tailgate BBQ washed down with alcoholic refreshments. A brief refreshen up at the hotel, then onwards for a special tour of the bars with Troy (FDNY’s own bar supremo). On Saturday, we were left to explore more of the city’s wonders. In the evening, we were privileged to a trip on the FDNY’s fireboat to take in the evening skyline of Manhattan, Governor’s Island, the Statue of Liberty and the famous three bridges connecting the city with the mainland. The evening was rounded off with an invitation to Jeff’s Bar (a former firefighter – Joe and Jimmy Brosi’s brother). On Sunday morning, we supported our hosts in a league fixture against the Rastas of Brooklyn. In the evening a formal dinner was held to mark the end of a memorable trip. Gifts were exchanged and tributes made to our sponsors (N.V. Hanlon Quality Decorators and DSFRS Sport and Social Association). On Monday we were picked up by the infamous beer bus (the cooler ever replenished) for a look at the FDNY’s training academy. Demonstrations included self-rescue lines out of a window, subway rescues etc on then to pick up Joe Brosi from his firehouse in the Bronx, refreshments and flight home. Footnote -- A massive thank you to our sponsors, FDNY and all who helped organise the trip.

Football Section Report 2008.

The season 2007/2008 has once again been a very active one for the Section. The domestic competitions and International matches were all completed on schedule after a minor hiccup involving the Welsh Football Section in mid season when they could not field a team to travel to play Scotland. For the first time ever the British Cup Final involved 2 Scottish teams. It was played at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster Rovers F.C. and it featured Highlands and Islands and Strathclyde. Strathclyde took the lead just after half time and with Highlands and Islands pressing for an equaliser Strathclyde scored a second against the run of play to clinch a deserved victory. Man of the Match was Andy Harrison from Strathclyde.

The Over 35’s final was played at Hinckley United, Leicestershire and this proved to be a very closely contested encounter between West Yorkshire and Strathclyde. The score was 1 – 1 after 90 minutes and with a penalty shoot-out looking likely West Yorkshire found that little bit extra to grab the winner 5 minutes from time. Man of the Match was Steve Nicholson, West Yorkshire.

12 teams representing 11 different districts competed in the National 5-a-side Championships which were hosted by Tyne & Wear. The eventual winners were Northern Ireland who retained the trophy for the second successive year after they beat Central Scotland in the final.

The UK Ladies 5-a-side Championships were also hosted by Tyne & Wear and attracted an entry of 8 teams. There were some very good individual skills on display and the tournament was won by a very strong West Midlands team.

In preparation for the European Championships which will be held in Rotterdam next year the UK team played two fixtures. The first one resulted in a narrow 2 – 1 defeat to the Prison Service at Oadby Town, Leicester and the second game ended with a 5 – 2 win after an outstanding performance against the British Police at Parkgate in South Yorkshire.
